Frequently Asked Questions |
What makes Fraxel Laser Treatment different than traditional CO2 laser resurfacing?Until recently there were two primary categories of laser skin treatment: ablative laser resurfacing and non-ablative laser or light-based therapy, each with their pros and cons. Ablative techniques regenerate aging and sun-damaged skin with superior cosmetic results, but are associated with significant side effects, risks and prolonged healing and recovery times. Nonablative techniques, on the other hand, generally carry fewer risks but require numerous treatments over several months, producing only limited clinical results of cosmetic improvement.Ablative laser skin resurfacing (performed with a CO2 laser) affects all of skin in the treatment area with the potential for side effects and lengthy recovery period. Fraxel Laser Treatment works by treating thousands of tiny points in a given treatment area, leaving a large percentage of the skin untouched. This treatment eliminates old epidermal pigmented cells and stimulates collagen production without burning the full surface of the skin. This "fractional" treatment allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire area were treated at once, using the body's natural healing process to create new, healthy tissue to replace skin imperfections.
How does Fraxel Laser Treatment work? The Fraxel SR Laser is designed to treat just a fraction of the skin cells in the target area. The clinical effect of this treatment technique is to alter the appearance of aging and sun-damaged skin. The creation of tiny microscopic wounds results in a wound healing process and a response to the coagulation of collagen fibers. What should I expect from Fraxel Laser Treatment?Patients who receive Fraxel Laser Treatment can expect speedy healing and minimal to no downtime. Side effects are minimal and typically involve swelling and redness. Mild swelling should subside within a day or so, and redness usually fades over several days. Patients can apply make-up immediately after treatment and return to routine activities. There is limited, if any, risk of infection or scarring. No oozing or crusting has ooccurredThe treatment area is prepared with w mild scrub cleanser, then covered with an FDA certified blue tint (the tint helps the laser focus on the contours of your skin). Then, a topical anesthetic ointment is applied 45-60 minutes before treatment to minimize any discomfort. Finally, the laser's hand piece is moved across your face in a fashion similar to an optical mouse for a home computer (as if your face were the mouse pad). The blue tint and anesthetic is washed off immediately after treatment. A treatment typically will take approximately 20-25 minutes. How many treatments are required for the best results?Clinical studies suggest that 3-5 treatments spaced about 5 to 7 days apart are best suited to dermal repair and positive skin changes.Does it hurt?Treatment is well tolerated and feels like a prickling sensation. The topical anesthetic ointment is applied to minimize any discomfort. Is it safe? The Reliant Technologies Fraxel Laser System is cleared by the FDA for dermatological procedures requiring the coagulation of soft tissue and for treatment of periorbital wrinkles and pigmented lesions. |
