Liposuction has become increasingly more popular for men. More and more men wish to have that “sculpted” appearance and new technologies in liposuction have made it possible to achieve dramatic results with small incisions that are nearly invisible once healed. Almost any area of the body can be treated with liposuction, but there are three areas that are particularly popular for men:
- Abdomen
- Neck
- Love handles
Liposuction differences between Men and Women
There are differences in how liposuction fat removal is performed on men and women.
Targeted Liposuction Areas: Women vs. Men
The main difference between liposuction for men and liposuction for women are the targeted areas. Essentially, liposuction can be performed anywhere on the body, but women tend to get fat removed from the hips and thighs while men tend to focus fat removal strategies on the spare tire, love handles, or the neck (to create a more masculine and sculpted jaw line).
The dense, fibrous fat on a man’s body adheres to the muscle tissues it covers more strongly than it does in women. Men’s fat stores, as a result, are often more stubborn and challenging to remove via liposuction.
Whereas women want to look thin, men are more interested in being toned. Often, it’s possible to remove only a small amount of fat from a man to achieve the appearance of tone. Typically, only small amounts of fat are removed. Liposuction efforts in men are geared at highlighting muscle contours for a more sculpted appearance.
Who are the ideal male liposuction candidates?
The ideal male candidate for liposuction is an individual with firm, elastic skin and only pockets of excess fat in specific areas of the body. Since liposuction is not a treatment for weight-loss, the ideal patient is of normal-weight and physically healthy. Patients should also have a realistic expectation regarding the results of their liposuction produce. Older patients with less skin elasticity may not be able to achieve the same results as younger patients who have tighter skin.

Male Breast Reduction
Gynecomastia / Pseudogynecomastia Correction
Gynecomastia and/or pseudogynecomastia may be caused by a variety of issues. Gynecomastia is caused by an overgrowth of glandular tissues resulting in an unusually large chest. Pseudogynecomastia is caused by an excess of fat in the breast area resulting in “man boobs”. Some men suffer from both gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia.
Utilizing liposuction and a specialized laser technology to remove the fat in the breasts is an effective treatment for gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia. For men who have undergone hormonal changes during puberty, it is possible to drain the mammary glands as well as remove excess fat from the chest area as necessary to achieve the desired appearance.
What to Expect
Most male patients with enlarged breasts have both glandular issues and excess fat. The fat can be treated easily with liposuction, but the glandular tissue requires a different approach. In some cases, a small amount of glandular overgrowth can be left untreated while removing excess fatty tissues using liposuction with desirable results. For most patients, both the glandular component and the excess fat must be addressed at the same time. A partial resection of the glands combined with liposuction of the breast fat often achieves the best result.
Recovering from Gynecomastia Surgery
Following a breast reduction surgery, there will be noticeable improvements. Both the shape and size of the chest tissues will be more pleasing to the eye. You may feel bruised and sore for several days following the procedure, but most patients report that the pain is minimal. Though every situation is different, most patients return to work within a few days. A loss of sensation is to be expected, though for most men, this is temporary and the nerve tissues regenerate over time.
Male breast reduction surgery may be the right choice for you if you’re suffering from gynecomastia or pseudogynecomastia. Set up a free consultation with our doctors by contacting us online or via telephone at 480-800-45010.
Laser Hair Removal for Men
These days, more and more men are getting hair removed from their chests and backs. Laser hair removal produces long-lasting effects that can be targeted at virtually any area of the body including the sideburns, nipples, ears, or the back.
How does laser hair removal work?
A beam of laser energy is used to penetrate the hair shaft to kill the hair at the root. The beam of light is highly concentrated and penetrates deeply without burning the skin. A multitude of hair follicles can be destroyed in just a fraction of a second when the laser is activated. The laser light-energy is absorbed by the pigments located inside the hair follicles leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.
We only use the top-of-the-line lasers for laser hair removal in men. The Candela GentleLase is used for medium to light skin tones. The 1064nm laser is used for medium to dark skin tones. We choose from a variety of lasers, choosing the most effective one for different skin types and different areas of the body.
How many treatment sessions are needed?
For optimal outcomes, laser hair removal generally takes a course of six to eight treatments. Treatments are spaced at four to six weeks apart so that the regrowth of hair can be curbed. Each time you return for a treatment, you’ll notice fewer and fewer hairs re-growing in the treated areas. Depending on the part of the body being treated, sessions take between 15 minutes and 1 hour to complete. The procedure is virtually pain-free, though patients often report a slight tingling in the area of the body being treated. There is no recovery period required. Patients can leave the clinic as soon as they’re ready.
Botox for Men
Botox is the gold standard in maintaining a youthful appearance. Dr. Hall is a National Educator for Allergen Corporation (the creators of Botox®) teaching other physicians nationwide about new techniques. He’s performed over 13,000 Botox injections during his career and he has advanced skills in using Botox for:
- Lower facial shaping
- Neck bands
- Wrinkles
- Excessive sweating
- Lip lines
- Dimpling
- Chin creases
- How does Botox work?
Botox works by blocking chemical signals from reaching the nerves that would normally make the wrinkle-causing muscles to contract. It’s a purified protein that’s injected in tiny doses directly into the areas of the face where wrinkles are beginning to take shape. The drug inhibits the nerve signals, resulting in diminished muscle movement in the face and neck, ultimately reducing the amount of folding in the skin overlying the area. The final outcome is a more youthful, smoother appearance to the skin.
Can men benefit from Botox?
Men can absolutely benefit from Botox! In fact, Botox is the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedure currently on the market for men. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons estimates that the number of Botox injections performed on men in the United States went up by more than 260% between 2000 and 2010. In the U.S. alone, more than 428,000 men underwent Botox injections in 2015.
Botox Basics for Men
When Botox is injected into the muscles underlying wrinkles on the face and neck, the muscles relax. This lessens the appearance of wrinkles in the forehead, around the mouth, and around the eyes. Many men today use Botox to maintain a youthful, relaxed appearance.
The Botox procedure is quick and easy. The results are long-lasting (usually for about 3 to 6 months), but temporary, and nearly pain-free. Patients need not worry about recovery time since none is needed. The injections leave no scarring or evidence in their wake. Patients can leave the office immediately following treatment without any sign that they’d had “work done”. The results are striking and the treatment takes minutes to perform.
How long do treatment results last?
The results from a Botox injection last on average between three and six months for patients being treated for wrinkle-reduction. Patients who get continuous treatment every three to four months, however, generally experience longer-lasting results. Patients who receive Botox treatments for excessive sweating generally experience up to 9 months without symptoms.
Excessive sweating treatment
Underarm sweating as well as excessive hand or foot sweat can be a concern for men. Men naturally sweat more than women do, so this can be a concern. Botox is the treatment of choice for men who experience excessive sweating. The effects from a Botox treatment for excessive sweating can last for up to three to six months, depending on a variety of individual factors.
Dermal Fillers for Men
One of the most common issues that aging men face is a loss of volume in the cheeks, leaving a hollowed-out, sunken appearance. Dermal fillers can add volume to the cheeks and the eyes, giving them a more youthful look, but it’s important for men to be treated differently than women when it comes to fillers. Since men have thicker skin, and stronger facial features with flatter cheekbones than women, filler must be concentrated at the front of the cheek and in the middle of the face.
Ideally, dermal fillers can fill in the hollowed-out areas of the face, reducing shadows, but not too much. The goal is to provide volume without making the face look puffy. Fillers can give a much younger-looking, well-rested appearance to a man’s face without taking away its masculinity. By reducing the shadows on the lower eyelid and upper cheek areas, men can achieve a look of freshness that’s still entirely natural.
There are three substances that have been approved for use as dermal fillers by the FDA: hyaluronic acid, Poly-L-lactic acid, and calcium hydroxyapatite. We use Restylane, Radiesse, Juvederm, and Sculptra, the four most popular FDA-approved dermal fillers on the market.
Juvéderm Voluma® XC
For age-related volume loss in the cheeks or mid-regions of the face, Juvéderm Voluma® XC is an excellent hyaluronic-acid-based dermal filler. Injections also contain lidocaine, a numbing agent that makes the procedure more comfortable. Results are instantly visible. Men can see a natural, youthful appearance that’s been proven to last for up to two years.
Radiesse®
Radiesse® (or Radiance) is a calcium hydroxyapatite dermal filler that’s used to treat deeper wrinkles. It’s particularly effective as a filler around the nose and mouth where smile lines, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines can age a patient by many years. One of the benefits of Radiesse®, however, is that it acts as a dermal filler during the first 3 months after treatment, adding volume and plumpness to areas in need. Then, over the next 18 months, microspheres in the injection stimulate the growth of collagen, which causes new tissues to develop and a correspondingly longer-lasting youthfulness.
Restylane®
As the first hyaluronic-acid-based filler to be approved by the FDA and hit the market in 2005, Restylane® is well-tolerated and easily broken down by the body. It’s a clear, injectable gel made of stabilized hyaluronic acid. Doctors inject the substance into the middle or deep layers of the dermis.
Sulptra®
Sulptra® or poly-l-lactic acid, is special. As a dermal filler, it stimulates the growth of collagen and the thickening of skin tissues wherever it’s injected. It is rarely used for the treatment of wrinkles and folds, but rather to create volume in the face where fat loss is apparent. The substance is a dry powder to which water is added to make it injectable. The water that was added to the powder mixture quickly disappears after the injection. Within about one month, the crystals attract collagen and build volume for a long-lasting effect.

Dual Laser Treatment: Fraxel
How does Fraxel work?
Fraxel is a non-ablative laser treatment that pokes hot, miniscule holes in the skin in order to cause hundreds of micro-injuries that then must self-repair, stimulating the growth of new collagen.
Fraxel Laser Types
Fraxel™ treatments are a safe option to create a dramatically enhanced look and feel to the skin. There are four different laser types that may be used to customize the outcomes for the patient’s specific needs.
Fraxel™ DUAL: Offers 2 wavelengths of light and 3 different treatment options within one machine. Can target both surface and deep layers of the skin.
Fraxel™ 1550nm Laser: Erbium fiber laser that can penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin to address issues such as scars and wrinkles.
Fraxel™ 1927nm Laser: The only thulium fiber laser on the market for cosmetic skin treatments. Targets discoloration, pigmentation and skin tone issues. This is an excellent choice for enhancing the texture of the skin and combating superficial signs of aging.
Fraxel™ DUAL 1550/1927: Combination erbium and thulium lasers used to target both the superficial and deeper layers of the skin.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment used to resurface the skin over the course of approximately 6 to 10 treatments. A special device is used to spray the skin with tiny crystals that mechanically exfoliate the dead cells from the surface (known as the stratum corneum). The outermost layer of dead skin cells is then vacuumed away, leaving a smoother, more youthful, and vibrant appearance.
Microdermabrasion is a relatively pain-free procedure that does not require a numbing agent. It confers a number of benefits including smoothing wrinkles and lines, reducing pore size, eliminating age spots, evening the skin tone, and enlivening dull skin.
Microdermabrasion offers many benefits:
- Treats acne and acne scars
- Exfoliates
- Gets rid of age spots
- Gets rid of black heads.
- Reduces the look of stretch marks
- Eliminates or reduces the appearance of pores
- Diminishes the appearance of blotchy skin Microdermabrasion should be performed as a series of treatments spaced at approximately four to six weeks apart.
Thermage CPT
Thermage is a non-invasive treatment option for patients who are concerned about the effects of aging, but who aren’t willing to endure the recovery time from surgery. The procedure utilizes radiofrequency energy encourage the body’s own connective tissues and collagen to contract. The overall effect is a smoothing of lines and wrinkles and a more youthful appearance to the skin anywhere on the body.
Treatment Results
Results are visible very soon are Thermage treatments begin as the body generates new, healthy collagen fibers. Continuous improvements are noted for up to six months after just the first treatment. No downtime is required for Thermage and the results are very natural-looking.
Thermage for Men
Because men have 25% thicker skin and their hormone constituency is different than that of women, the structure of male collagen is different. Men also tend to take less care of their skin, exposing themselves to damaging environmental elements. Because of this, doctors have developed a specialized Thermage protocol that’s tailored for men’s needs.
The most commonly treated areas of the body are:
